Training
All of our training packages are designed to supplement existing knowledge, while developing skills in multiple disciplines. We are offering face-to-face and online training options for all our training programs.
Our programmes, FT-ED and MFT-ED in particular, aim to build a shared philosophy within organisations by training teams rather than individuals.
We also encourage a broad view of evidence-based practice which combines clinical expertise, collaborative relationships with young people, and the delivery of treatments based on strong empirical research.

Trainings in specific evidence-based treatments
Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa (FT-AN)
Maudsley Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa (FT-AN) is a manualised systemic therapy recommended by NICE as a first-line treatment for child and adolescent anorexia nervosa. This is a three-day training programme, with the option of ongoing supervision for participating teams. We strongly emphasise the importance of working closely with families, rebuilding fractured relationships and allowing parents to take an active role in their child’s recovery.
Multi-Family Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa (MFT-AN)
MFT-AN is a world-renowned group therapy approach that we’ve developed and refined over the last two decades. Like FT-AN, this treatment aims to help families pool their resources, rediscover their strengths and actively take part in the process. However, MFT brings together groups of families to form a unified community, who can share their experiences and find common solutions. Our intensive four-day training programme integrates both didactic and experiential modules, with negotiable ongoing supervision.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-ED)
Eating disorders will commonly manifest alongside mental health conditions such as perfectionism, distorted body image and OCD. CBT-ED is a form of behavioural therapy that targets co-existing difficulties in young people struggling with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. We offer a two-day workshop, covering the fundamentals of CBT for eating disorders.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for self-harm: The Cutting Down
The Cutting Down is a manualised CBT approach for working with young people who self-harm and engage in suicidal behaviours. It consists of 14 sessions for patients, and 5 for their parents and carers, integrating techniques from traditional CBT, ACT and DBT models. The programme teaches adaptive skills that target the symptoms of depression, anxiety and other emotional difficulties that may lead to self-harm. This is a two-day training.
Family and Multi-Family therapy for Bulimia Nervosa (FT-BN and MFT-BN)
This two-day training focuses on evidence-based treatments for bulimia nervosa and associated emotional dysregulation difficulties, including systemic, CBT and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT).
Radical Openness Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (RO-DBT)
RO-DBT is a new treatment method that targets a spectrum of disorders characterised by excessive self control, or over control (OC). Focusing on the communicative functions of emotional expression (such as social signalling and neurophysiological arousal), this approach promotes social bonds and reduces isolation. Our one-day introductory workshop will take you through the basic principles of this model, and the ways in which it can address eating disorders in young people.
Attachment Based Family Therapy (ABFT)
ABFT is a family therapy approach used to treat depression in adolescents. Studies have proved ABFT’s effectiveness in reducing the symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts. In collaboration with Professor Guy Diamond and Dr. Suzanne Levy, we offer introductory, intensive and advanced training courses.
Working with young people and children with Avoidant/Restrictive Food intake Disorder (ARFID).
Masterclass in supervision
The aim of this programme is to offer a two-day masterclass in supervision for the Maudsley Family Therapy for eating disorders (FT-ED) and Multifamily Therapy for Eating Disorders (MFT-ED). This Intensive two-day masterclass will include basic principles of supervision, FT and MFT/ED specific supervision, and complex case discussion.
The programme is designed for experienced clinicians and supervisors, with significant experience in delivering FT-ED and MFT-ED and providing supervision for eating disorders multi-disciplinary teams. It can include experienced supervisors of FT- ED and MFT-ED from all disciplines (i.e. Psychiatrists, Family Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, Psychotherapists, and Nurse Specialists).
Team development and basic ED knowledge
This four-day training programme offered jointly by CNWL and MCCAED focuses on eating disorders in children and young people. It’s drawn from the wider National Whole-Team Training, (funded by Health Education England) which up-skilled 77 new CYP ED teams in 2017.
You’ll be taught by the same leading experts and given access to the same training materials as the extended course. If your clinical team has experience with CAMHS but is new to eating disorders, (or has experience with adult eating disorders but lacks experience working with children) this programme is for you.
We do not directly organise this training but we contribute to the delivery. We will update the events page when this is scheduled to be delivered.
Bespoke training packages and consultations
We also offer a number of longer-term trainings and consultations for teams based in other countries (e.g. France, Denmark, Switzerland, Ireland, Cyprus, Norway, the USA and Canada). Each package is tailored to your organisation’s specific needs, and designed from the ground up to support MDT working and build on your team’s existing skills. Depending on your requirements, we can negotiate national and international outreach team training packages.
We adjust the level of our training packages to match your team’s knowledge and experience. We also offer workshops and masterclasses in supervision and ongoing team consultation, supporting the development of local training networks.
We can negotiate outreach (face-to-face) and online training options.
Below are just some of our packages and consultations:
- Consultation on eating disorder service development
- Outreach trainings on the evidence based treatment model
- Supporting local training networks
- Ongoing team supervision
- Consultation on Intensive treatment Programme (ITP) service development
Who can benefit from our training programmes?
We expect members of the teams we train to have accredited qualifications or registrations (e.g. psychologists, family therapists, nurses, psychotherapists and psychiatrists). Our training programmes can contribute to the Continuing Professional Development of appropriately qualified practitioners. Other team members, such as paediatricians and dieticians, can attend alongside their colleagues to ensure the applicability of various therapy approaches.
Interested in any of our trainings, courses or lectures?
Our training programmes are designed with whole teams in mind. That’s why if you register three or more colleagues, you’ll receive an additional 15% discount for our online trainings.
