Medication can be very useful in combination with talking treatments like Family Therapy. We do not prescribe medication lightly, and wherever possible will try to avoid it. We will always prescribe the lowest possible doses for our young patients, for the shortest possible length of time and with regular reviews.
The two most common medications that we prescribe are Olanzapine and a limited range of antidepressants. Olanzapine can be a very effective tool for relieving intense episodes of eating-disorder related anxiety. Antidepressants may be prescribed if a patient has clinically significant depression, anxiety or OCD.
Some medications may not be effective if a patient is severely underweight.
